OUTREACH

I’m Amanda Fitzroy, and I’m the Outreach Officer for LAGER Can.

As well as the many individual and event litter picks that LAGER Can is well renowned for, we also actively encourage children and young people to take part in litter picking.  Many primary schools, Scout and Guide groups, and sports associations regularly litter-pick in their local areas in the Borough.

You can contact me on mobile: 07946 543491 or email: outreach.lagercan2020@gmail.com.

The first primary school to take part in regular litter picks was Khalsa Primary School in Norwood Green. They have been litter picking fortnightly since July 2021. Because of their perseverance and dedication, they won Keep Britain Tidy’s Young Litter Heroes Award in 2022.

Other schools now involved in regular litter picking are St Anselm’s RC Primary School (Southall), St Mary’s CofE Primary School (Norwood Green), St Gregory’s RC Primary School (Ealing), Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Primary School (Greenford), Dairy Meadow (Southall), Hobbayne (Hanwell), West Acton and Viking (Northolt) primary schools.

St Anselm’s RC Primary School and St Mary’s CofE Primary School were joint winners of  Southall Community Alliance’s Team of the Year Award in 2023.

The 1st North Ealing, Pitshanger, 1st Hanwell, 5th Hanwell, and 7th Hanwell Scouts have invited LAGER Can to attend their meetings to discuss the challenges posed by litter and to join them for litter picks.

Southall Athletic Football Club, based on the sports pitches behind Norwood Hall, completed their first litter pick around Norwood Green in November 2023, with over 60 players and their coaches taking part. Over 80 bags of litter were collected. Another litter pick is planned soon.

Our aim is to get even more schools and other organisations involved in litter picking. The enthusiasm shown by children when on a group litter pick, and their determination to pick up even the smallest piece of litter, is a joy to see.

Below are quotes from children from St Mary’s RC Primary School.

“Not only does litter picking benefit the environment and nature, but it also benefits you and all humanity.” Krish, Y6

“Litter picking encourages children to look after their own area and take responsibility.” Kyrie, Y6

If your school or youth organisation would like to take part in regular litter picking, I can meet you to go through the practicalities of group litter picking with children, as well as arrange the provision of equipment such as litter pickers, gloves and LAGER Can high-vis vests.
